A Champions Dinner that truly honoured the Club’s sports winners

Godfrey Robert

Appropriately renamed Champions Dinner, it was a gathering of luminaries; and assembly of stars who were true winners in an eventful year for sports.

As always, during the year’s schedule of events, members participate in the hope of finishing on the podium so that they can make it to the “Grand Champions’ Dinner”.

It was as though the Club was honouring the club’s sports greats, among them some Hall of Famers.

So when the grand event was held at the Tampines Course on Oct 26, about 80 members, each with their own winning story to tell, attended the dinner.

Distinguished they were in many ways, but all of them had one thing in common: they performed with distinction in whatever event they took part in during the year.

To give the gathering the rare honour of being winners in the true sense, many committee members, including Club Vice President Chris Chiu, Captain Dr Goh Hoon Pur, Vice-Captain Melvin Choo and General Manager Elliott Gray graced the occasion.

To give the event a competitive spirit, a 2-person Texas Scramble battle was held with 60 members forming 15 flights on a perfect afternoon at the Tampines course.

Lim Chiang Wei and Tarunjeet Singh Dhingra were clear winners with a net score of 62, four better than stalwarts Chris Chiu and Samir Bedi.

Third were battle-hardened Meylinda Setyo and Nina Um, who edged out the pairs of Stanley Ang and Marc Tan, and Marcus Loh and Sean Loh on countback after posting 67s.

The top lucky draw prize of a complimentary flight at Orchid Country Club went to Nicholas Thong, with second-placed Nina Um claiming the complimentary flight at National Service Resort and Country Club.

At the eight-course dinner, celebrations were in order for the club’s Marketing Convenor Benny Tay who turned 72.

Fabulous live music was provided by Terry and Robyn, and the diners enjoyed the sounds of the group who gave the event a perfect touch.
