They were seniors and super-seniors.
Yet they exhibited youthful exuberance in their patience and tenacity during the Senior Strokeplay Championship on April 25 at Garden Course and 26 in Round 2 at the Tampines course.
The display was mainly off-course as 51 golfers (39 men and 12 women) were held hostage indoors by the disruptive weather.
On the Sunday, lightning warning suspended play from 11:40 am to 1:15 pm, with gloomy forecasts from the Meteorological Service Singapore that there could be afternoon showers.
Round 2 got underway on a partial shotgun at 1:20pm, but another lightning warning was soon issued, and play was suspended again from 1:30pm to 2:45pm.
The skies opened up later, but after 40 minutes it was, for a change, pleasant weather.
The inclement weather put Round 2 under jeopardy, but thankfully many groups playing in 3-ball and the desire among the participants to ensure the championship remained a 36-hole event, everyone managed to finish just in time, at 7pm (men) and 7.19pm (women).
The determination of the seniors was evident in every participant on course too, and each player had his or her moment to cherish.

Yukiko Tai celebrated most by successfully retaining the overall women’s senior strokeplay championship with gross 159, 6 shots less than the previous year.
Other winners: Ladies Senior Division winner, Wendy Lim (gross 173) and Jasmine Chew runner-up (gross 183) and Jenny Choi won the best nett with 150.
In the women’s super senior division, Norlia Embong took the honours with gross 166 on countback from Meylinda Setyo. The best nett went to Mollie Low (154).

In the men’s event, the overall winner in the senior strokeplay division was Masaru Hamada (gross 148), adding his name to the Senior Strokeplay Trophy for the first time.
Other winners: Men Senior Division winner: Raymond Lee (gross 154), runner-up Steven Lee (gross 157), Best nett: Lau Wing Cheok (142 nett).
Super Senior Division winner: Teo Han Kiat (160 gross), runner-up: David Soh (162 gross), best nett: Ricardo Portabella (151 nett).
Players were greeted with buggy drinks (100plus & water) and bananas on the 1st and 10th tee.
All the winners will be invited to the Combined Captains’ Day on October 4.
