Raymond Lee was eyeing a hat-trick of victories.
And the winner for the last two years was pumped up for the occasion.
But his late charge proved insufficient as he lost out to Liu Wei Guo in the Club’s Senior Strokeplay Championship at the Tampines Course on April 27.
Lee, who trailed the leaders Tan and Ang by two shots after the first-day’s Saturday round with a three-over 75 at the Garden Course, bounced back in the last four holes on Sunday.
He parred the 15th, 16th, 17 and 18th holes in difficult conditions, however wasn’t enough to defend the Senior Strokeplay Championship.
Liu Wei Guo started the final round one shot back from the leaders and returned the best gross score during the final round at Tampines, with rounds of 74-80 Wei Guo clinched the men’s Senior Strokeplay Championship by a margin of 2.
Stephen Tan, joint leader after day 1 with a gross 73 at Garden Course, shot 83 on day 2 to win the men’s Senior division (50 to 65 years). Raymond Lee finished runner up in the men’s senior division and Stanley Ang placed best nett.
In the Super Senior category (age 66 and above), Sng Seow Wah finished on top with gross 170, four shots better than Club Chairman Niam Chiang Meng. David Ong won the best nett.
Yukiko Tai won the ladies’ Senior Strokeplay Championship with scores 80-85. Yukiko became the 3rd different winner of the ladies Senior Strokeplay Championship.
In the ladies’ Senior Division (50 to 59 years’ category) the winner was Jasmine Chew on 169 (82-87) with Karen Wong as runner-up on 174 (81-93). Sachie Hosokawa placed best nett.
Melinda Seyto showed her prowess in the above-60 division with 167 (82-85) gross, four shots better than the seasoned Norlia Embong (83-88). Lady Captain Wendy Soh won best nett.
On conclusion of play, Lady Captain Wendy Soh popped a bottle of champagne in toast to Yukiko Tai, while the men raised a glass of beer to congratulate Liu Wei Guo.
All winners will be invited to the Champions Dinner Annual Prize Presentation on October 26.
