Vicky clinches play-off win in club’s Strokeplay Championship; 13-year-old Ryusei crowned youngest Men’s Champion

Godfrey Robert

The first round of the 54 hole Strokeplay Championship tournament was played at Garden Course and rounds 2 & 3 were at Tampines Course.

In the men’s competition, Chung Hong Zheng had an impressive third round, shooting one over par to apply pressure on the 36-hole leader, 13-year-old Ryusei Kuroiwa.

Despite the mounting challenge from the more experienced contenders, the composed teenager showed maturity beyond his years. Ryusei held his nerve over the closing holes, carding a steady five-over-par final round to clinch the Club Strokeplay Championship title.

In doing so, he etched his name into the club’s history as the youngest ever winner of this prestigious event, a remarkable achievement that drew warm applause from fellow competitors and supporters alike.

Chung Hong Zheng won the Men’s Division Championship, while Dow Kwon, who turned 14 during the championship, finished a respectable runner-up in the Men’s Division Championship.

The Men’s Intermediate Division which is contested 10.1 and above was won by Jared Tang. Stanley Ang finished runner-up OCB and Marc Tan won best nett.

The Ladies Strokeplay Championship was very closely contested! The three-way contest for the title in the Ladies’ Championship stirred so much interest and upped the ante on the Club’s Strokeplay Championship.

After 54 holes, Meylinda Setyo, Sirikit Oh and Vicky Chong were tied for the lead on gross 247.

Sirikit led after two rounds (Aug 24 and 30) with scores of four-over 75 (Garden) and 14-over 86 (Tampines) on 161.

Following another 86 on the Tampines Course in the third round on Aug 31, allowed Meylinda (82) and Vicky (84) to catch up.

Vicky shot 79 and 84 after two rounds, while Meylinda had rounds of 77 and 88.

The trio proceeded to Hole 1 for a play-off in what turned out to be a close contest to decide the winner.

Vicky made a routine par on the par-four first hole while Meylinda narrowly missed her par putt and Sirikit had a clutch up and down to tie with Vicky.

So it became a two-way decider as the Sirikit and Vicky made it to the second hole, a tough and long par-four.

And it was decided on the second green when Vicky beat Sirikit.

All winners will be invited to the Champions Dinner and Annual Prize Presentation on Oct 26 when the club will recognise the 2025 prize winners.

A total of 51 golfers, 16 ladies and 35 men, participated in the event for members with handicap 24.4 and below.

Buggy drinks and bananas prior to tee off were well received.

A Singapore Golf Association Level 2 Rules Official was present for each round.
